Backup
What is done in the background to ensure fileserver data availability?
#shadow copies
So-called "shadow copies" are activated on the HIH fileserver, allowing users to independently restore previous versions of files and folders at any time. This function can be accessed by right-clicking on files or folders under "Restore Previous Versions":

#homes
The personal area in the "homes" share is saved in the background daily at 19:00, automatically and incrementally onto a separate HIH storage system.
#groups
The workgroup data in the "groups" share is saved weekly on a regular, automatic and incremental basis in the background onto a separate HIH storage system.
#Administration
The Administration area is saved in the background daily at 19:10, automatically and incrementally using the borg-backup tool. Additionally a backup to the university datacenter (ZDV) is made daily, automatically and incrementally (bacula).
#ZDV Shares
Data on university (ZDV) shares is stored in two separate locations (Morgenstelle, Wächterstraße). Snapshots of the filesystem are created every 10 minutes and kept available for 4 weeks. So this is the time available for the users to notice, that something should be restored because of accidential change or removal.
