Data protection when traveling abroad
If you wish to enter another country, it is now not only your suitcases that are checked at the border. Customs officers are interested in your electronic devices such as notebooks and smartphones and the data on them. They may demand access to devices and data. If you refuse, you will be allowed to start your return journey. Here are some technical measures you can take to protect your data:
- Do not store any confidential data on the devices you take with you on your trip. Not even encrypted data. Customs officers are particularly interested in this.
- The customs officers are particularly interested in online and cloud services such as OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Cloud, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, WhatsUpp and all the other apps you have installed. Customs officers are increasingly checking the content of these apps. Uninstall these apps and the associated synchronized data. When you are in the country, you can reinstall the apps (if the country allows them at all).
- You should not have a password manager installed on your device. The customs officer may ask for the master password.
- Do not take any devices (notebooks, smartphones, external hard disks, USB sticks) with you on your trip that you use here at the University of Tübingen. Get cheap second devices. This makes it easier to keep the devices clean.
- Do not take any electronic devices with you. Save your non-confidential data (lectures, presentations) on a cheap USB stick and only take this with you. Throw it away after the trip, as it could be infected with malware if inserted into a foreign device.
- Store confidential data that you need to access during your trip in a cloud service (ideally encrypted). Do not access this data via an app, but via a web browser.
- Don't forget to delete the browser history afterwards.
- When entering China from certain countries, it is reported that the smartphone must be handed over to the customs officer at the border. This installs a spy app. This searches the smartphone for certain files. If apps from social media services are installed, these will also be searched.
And remember: Only foolish people claim that the world is simple.
